Bristol Aero Engines, Filton, Bristol - 1954 to 1958

While Geoffrey was a pilot in RAF Fighter command he was also an engineer with Bristol Aero Engines responsible for flight tests of new engines in "Flying Test Beds" at Bristol, and in new aircraft with firms such as Avro and Folland in England, Fiat in Italy, Breguet in Belgium, and Dassault in France.

Pressure suits were required for flights to 60,000 feet.

English Electric "Canberra" used as a flying test bed for Bristol Olympus engines.
World altitude records for 2 crew (with me as Engineer) and just the pilot, were achieved with this aircraft (over 60,000 feet). The Olympus engine continued to be developed for the Concorde.

Personnel involved in the flight testing of the Avro "Vulcan" with the flight crew on the left  including Avro pilot Godfrey Auty (left), and Geoffrey (3rd left) and Charlie Harding (my boss, 2nd from right) from Bristol.
